Certified translations
If you’re setting up a foreign subsidiary or involved in international litigation, you might need to submit a certified translation (as defined in the relevant jurisdiction) of your supporting documents. Notarization – authentication by a Swedish notary public
Authentication means that the notary witnesses the translator’s signature and confirms that the translator truly is a certified translator under Swedish law.
Legalization by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and embassy
Legalization certifies that a signature, stamp or seal on a Swedish document is genuine, and that the signatory is authorized to sign in the stated capacity. Legalization is performed by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or in exceptional cases by a Swedish embassy. Usually it also has to be validated by the embassy or consulate in Sweden representing the country where the translation is to be used.
Apostille
In countries that are party to the Hague Convention, the document does not have to be validated by a consulate, and an apostille issued by a notary public is sufficient. By affixing an apostille to a translation, a notary public verifies who has translated the document and certifies that the translator is duly authorized to perform this type of translation. In Sweden, only notaries public can issue an apostille.
